Leading lights of the new romantic movement were this London super-group consisting of: Steve Strange (lead vocals), Midge Ure (of Rich Kids & Ultravox on guitar, backing vocals, synthesizers), John McGeoch (of Magazine & Siouxsie & The Banshees on guitar, backing vocals, saxophone), Dave Formula (of Magazine on synthesizer), Billy Currie (of Ultravox on electric violin, synthesizer) and Rusty Egan (of Rich Kids & Skids on drums, backing vocals, electronic percussion). Their debut long-player was delivered in November, 1980, and housed 4 terrific singles: “Tar” (didn't chart), “Fade To Grey” (#8), “Mind Of A Toy” (#13) and “Visage” (#21). To the listener, they worked well as a unit, but it was always going to difficult for Steve Strange to hold the group together, as Midge Ure would later comment: “The trouble with Visage was that there were too many chiefs, six characters all wanting an equal say without putting in an equal amount of work. I was doing most of the writing and producing, and we all knew Steve [Strange] was the front-man, but when it became successful, jealousy and the nasty side of the business crept in. That was never the way it was intended.”
