“Black Metal” by Venom - album review

Second album from the Newcastle trio, released in November, 1982. They line-up: Conrad 'Cronos' Lant (19, vocals, bass); Jeff 'Mantas' Dunn (20, guitars) and Anthony 'Abaddon' Bray (21, drums). Such was the influence of their extreme brand of heavy metal that a whole genre would be named after this album. Satanic themes are never too far from the surface, which is pretty much down there with Christian Rock in my wish list. Truth is, I'm only here as a result of my 1,001 albums quest and didn't expect to find anything that resonated with my tastes, but suffice to say if they'd done any more like “Countess Bathory” they could have been up for inventing grunge while they were at it.
