“Blue Valentine” by Tom Waits - album review
features in: Album Chart of 1978 ● Album Chart of the Decade: 1970s |
The first Tom Waits album where Jazz doesn't emerge as the foremost genre. The story goes that part way through the sessions, he replaced his musicians in order to create a less jazz-oriented sound and that he himself switched from piano to electric guitar as his main instrument. I get the impression he's very self aware and that he's keen to keep pushing on artistically; I do like this restless spirit. Ironically, my favourite track, “Romeo Is Bleeding”, is the jazziest thing on the set, but it's delivered in the right way for me - with a sense of Mancini's Pink Panther cool.
