Following the break-up of his previous group, Mudcrutch, in late 1975, Tom Petty dusted himself down and, at the record company's behest, positioned himself as a solo artist with group. Sticking with him all the way from Mudcrutch was guitarist Mike Campbell. Another Mudcrutch player, keyboardist Benmont Tench, had formed his own group, and he and bassist Ron Blair and drummer Stan Lynch were all persuaded to join the new Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers set up. Their sound was a step-forward from Mudcrutch, adding a touch of rock n roll swagger to the Southern Rock, with half an ear on the emerging new wave largely due to the use of synthesizers throughout. America still wasn't ready for them, but Britain took them on, the album placing at #24, with the album's best track, “Anything That's Rock 'n' Roll” giving them a UK Top 40 hit in the summer of '77.
