A full turn to the contemporary from the Melbourne 4-piece who were in a good place in 1966, as the liner notes tell: “At last we have produced an album of songs written in our time. Come the day, perhaps, when this selection will remind you, and us, of a very happy time in our lives.” Their stock was high, having been named “Best New Group of 1965” at the 1966 New Musical Express Poll Winners Awards, and they appeared at the subsequent Wembley Arena concert, alongside the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Dusty Springfield and the Animals. They can be a hit or a miss for me but when they're good, they're very good. Opener “Come The Day”, written by the group's guitarist Bruce Woodley, is sprightly and uplifting, looking forward to the day when “the trumpets of war will cease to blow”; amen to that brothers and sisters. Biblical positivity is to the fore on “Turn, Turn, Turn”, a fantastic rendition of the tune created by Pete Seeger in the late 50s. Excellent harmonizers, they're well placed to cover “California Dreamin’” and, although they could never hope to match the Mamas and Papas classic for dynamism, it's a job well done.
