The fifth album from the determinedly anonymous art collective is regarded as one of their most accessible works; I can't help wondering what the inaccessible from their vast catalogue might sound like! Side one recompiles “Duck Stab!”, a seven-song EP that sold out when first released in February '78, 9 months earlier. They seize the opportunity to remaster the recording, giving fans good reason to consider making a new purchase. With this in mind, initial plans to release “Buster & Glen” as the new album in its own right were altered, with just seven new songs being presented as side two of the long player. Guest collaborator Philip 'Snakefinger' Lithman reconnects with the group, the Londoner being back in San Francisco after several years away. With a neat line in musical and lyrical absurdity, the LP comes across as the spiritual nephew of “Trout Mask Replica” without the jazz freakout, veering between goofy oddball and sinisterly deranged. My favourites all appear on the brand new side two, the end couple being the standouts. My overall feeling? I think I need to hear more from these intriguing adventurers.
