Since the '79 debut, drummer Palmolive had left for a journey of spiritual self-discovery and by now the other three had given up trying to replace her, instead employing a number of session men to take on the role. One look at the playing credits of the core trio reveals much: Ana da Silva (vocals, guitar, shruti box, kalimba, bass, percussion, harmonica), Gina Birch (vocals, bass, guitar, balafon) and Vicky Aspinall (vocals, guitar, bass, violin, piano). Frankly, there's not enough shruti box action in rock, so fair play to the Raincoats for plugging a gap in the market. Notice how all three get a bass credit, they're madder than ever for a heavy bass, and that is threaded all the way through the highly experimental set, at times bordering on the prog and most certainly camped with Public Image at the 1981 festival of anti-rock idiosyncrasy.
