The American version of The Animals debut was first to market and led-off with “The House Of The Rising Sun”, albeit the truncated version that had appeared Stateside as a 45 (MGM K-13264) just weeks earlier. Severe treatment of a classic! Twelve cover versions make up the LP, as was the done thing for the upcoming UK R n B groups of the time. They manage to animalize the songs, mostly down to the stylish and distinctive lead vocals of Eric Burdon and the menacing organ and keyboards of Alan Price. The American kids might have had first dibs on an Animals LP, but they missed out on “Story Of Bo Diddley” and “Dimples” (2 of 5 changes on the British edition all told). All the same, this was a gritty debut which went a long way towards establishing the English music scene as a credible leftfield force.
