“Rock N Soul” by Solomon Burke - album review
features in: (B-list) Album Chart of 1964 ● (B-list) Album Chart of the 1960s ● 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die ![]() |

After a string of a dozen hit records, by November 1963 Burke had agreed to be crowned the "King of Rock ’n’ Soul" in a ceremony at the Royal Theatre in Baltimore by local deejay Fred Robinson, known professionally as "Rockin’ Robin", who also gave him a cape and crown that he always wore on stage. Burke accepted the appellation the "King of Rock ’N’ Soul", indicating "without soul, there’d be no rock and without rock, there’d be no soul." There was only ever gonna be one title for his next LP. The new tracks were supplemented by the re-use of “Cry To Me” and “Just Out Of Reach” (Solomon Burke’s Greatest Hits, 1962) and “If You Need Me” (If You Need Me, 1963).
