The 2nd of 3 albums for MGM. 1 back album track makes a re-appearance - “PSR 1983” (Electronic Magnetism, 1971). Despite his admiration for Burke, Atlantic label boss Jerry Wexler also described him as “a piece of work: wily, highly intelligent, a salesman of epic proportions, sly, sure-footed, a never-say-die entrepreneur”. It was no surprise then that Solomon would be right at the front of the burgeoning blaxploitation film soundtrack scene, with “Cool Breeze” ensuring his slice of the pie. It wasn’t a bad effort, mixing up a blend of soulful ballads with that brass-funk orchestration which was all the rage. Of the top 2 tracks I noted: “The Bus” (7.0) - You have to say, this is pretty cool in a very Starsky & Hutch kind of way. And it’s got a dynamite “S Express” type break-riff which is a samplers dream. “Icbyatht W.T.” - An entertaining oddity. To the tune of the Lone Ranger, Solomon Burke acts out a “damn fool” monologue with the likes of “Can’t believe you ate the whole thing!”
