“Richard P Havens, 1983” by Richie Havens - album review
features in: Album Chart of 1969 ● Album Chart of the Decade: 1960s |

With half an eye on Orwell's “1984”, Richie Havens third LP for Verve wasn't easily digested artistically or physically, spread over 4 sides with a runtime of 71 minutes. The album seems split on originals and covers, with no less than 4 Beatles numbers included. As with all of his covers, Richie manages to make them his own, his trademark being the soul-infused folkie-croon. “Strawberry Fields Forever” and “She's Leaving Home” are tasteful and worthwhile, “Lady Madonna” and a cringeworthy live version of “With A Little Help From My Friends” not so. It's this patchiness that sums the album up really - the live side 4 is particularly dull for me.
