Emerging from the post-punk gloom, this was the new “sound of young Scotland” featuring hand clapping, breezy horns and a whole lot of funky jangle. the Glasgow-based quartet were: Edwyn Collins (22, guitar, vocals); James Kirk (guitar, vocals); David McClymont (bass guitar) and Steven Daly (drums, percussion). They held appeal for both alternative and pop camps, but were more likely to lean towards the soul boys than the punks. A string of indie hits had built the momentum to the debut LP which finally arrived in February '82 on Alan Horne's Postcard label. A fine remake of their debut single from 2 years earlier, “Falling And Laughing”, opens the set on a high, and the quality is maintained until the rather drippy cover of Al Green's “L.O.V.E.” kills my mojo at the very close of side one. Side two opens charmingly enough with the “Intuition Told Me, Pt. 1” / “Upwards And Onwards” pairing, but “Satellite City” serves as a stark reminder that I'm not a fan of this new Average-White-Band-vibe that's plaguing the new wave at this time. The pretty quirkiness of “Three Cheers For Our Side” gets me back onside, before “Consolation Prize” and “Felicity” blow the roof off. I guess I'm an indie kid at heart.
