TJR says

Their second new music album of 1982 arrived in November. 10 months on from “You Can’t Hide Your Love Forever”, guitarist/songwriter James Kirk and drummer Steven Daly had been ousted, with the new quartet lining-up: Edwyn Collins (23, guitar, vocals, violin); ex-Josef-K Malcolm Ross (22, guitar, vocals, keyboards); David McClymont (bass guitar, keyboards) and Zeke Manyika (27, drums, vocals, percussion). The album's lead single, “I Can’t Help Myself”, was out in October, but just missed out on giving them a first Top 40 hit, stalling at #42. A travesty! There was no such hard-luck story for the follow-up early in the new year, the wholly unique sponge-funk of “Rip It Up” hitting #8, putting them firmly Top of The Pops, although it would prove to be the group's only Top 40 hit. A third single, “Flesh Of My Flesh” was issued in May '83, but this also stalled at #41. The set's a whole lot more polished than the debut, but too much flirtation with MOR Haircut 100 territory is not good for my punk heart. That said, the standouts are truly magnificent; as well as the singles “Louise Louise” is a pretty wee gem and it's great to hear them try something different on the reggae-tinged “Breakfast Time”. Final analysis: Forgive my punky sneer melodramatics, but where's Captain Kirk?
