“If It’s Only For Tonight” by O.V. Wright - album review
features in: Album Chart of 1965 ● Album Chart of the Decade: 1960s |
Beset by legal wrangles, O.V. switched from Goldwax to the Peacock Records imprint Back Beat where he'd settle for several years to follow. He was teamed with producer Willie Mitchell, and released this debut album in July, 1965. His gospel roots never too far from the surface, he demonstrates his prowess with the southern soul ballad, exemplified on the 3 best tracks; the Sam-Cooke-esque “Can’t Find True Love”, an interpretation of the traditional “Motherless Child” and the album's hit single, “You’re Gonna Make Me Cry”.
