The second Nash The Slash album was produced by Steve Hillage, the old Canterbury scene guitarist now turning his hand to production duties. As with the debut of '79, it's a weird and interesting affair, but largely fails to excite me, largely due to the vaguely unsettling prog pomp which bobbles 'neath the new wave surface. The bandaged 32-year-old, somewhat impressively, sings and plays everything himself; synthesizer, mandolin, keyboards, voices, electronic percussion, pedals, electric violin and 'devices'. “Wolf” is a killer-starter, initially coming on all Jimi Hendrix (with no guitars!), before settling on what can only be described as a unique brand of futuristic new wave surf rock, plundering Prokofiev's “Peter and the Wolf” (1936) for musical motifs and licks. Talking of surf-rock, the inclusion of last year's single - a poppy cover of “Dead Man's Curve” (Jan & Dean, 1963) - is rather unaffecting by comparison. Sillier are the covers of “19th Nervous Breakdown” (The Rolling Stones, 1966) and “Dopes On The Water” (Deep Purple, 1972). The Nash the Slash I'd like him to be is not the Nash the Slash he wants to be. Pity.
