Arriving in October '79 was the second album of the year from the re-energized group, just 7 months after “Overkill”. It's best songs aren't as strong for me, but it's consistently decent nonetheless, with the galloping and semi-biographical “Poison” standing out on side one, and the stone-rocker “Step Down” doing likewise on side two. The album closes with “Bomber” (named after Len Deighton's fictional novel of 1970, a tale relating to the last flight of an RAF Bomber over Germany on the night of June 31st, 1943), the album's only single, which gave them their biggest hit to date, rising to #34 in the UK Top 40. The group's biggest critic, Lemmy himself, thought the album was too well polished: “I wish we'd played the songs onstage first, like we did with the Overkill album, if we could've played them for three weeks on the road it would have been less slick… listen to the way we play them live and compare that to the album”. I'm no expert but that sounds a bit harsh to me. In any event, this was their biggest hit album to date, ascending to #12 in the UK chart. These boys were on the march.
