“Final Exam” by Loudon Wainwright III - album review
features in: Album Chart of 1978 ● Album Chart of the Decade: 1970s |

The second of his two-record deal with Arista was, rather unfairly, a critical and commercial flop. Your journeyman is often at the mercy of his latest hook up, and in this case Loudon's backing band were Slow Train, a competent group of Oakies in the country-rock vein consisting of Ron Getman (guitar), John Crowder (bass), Glen Mitchell (keyboards), Stephen Tubin (keyboards) and Richard Crooks (drums). It could never be a classic with this background, but Loudon's great writing continually threatens to shine through the cloud, and often succeeds in doing so. Why does he present me with this obstacle?
