“Attempted Mustache” by Loudon Wainwright III - album review
features in: Album Chart of 1973 ● Album Chart of the Decade: 1970s |

Loudon's fourth was recorded with Nashville session men and largely fails to catch-a-fire with me, although his semi-remake of Woody Guthrie's “New York Town” redone as “I Am The Way (New York Town)” has the live audience in a state of shock and awe as he (playfully) flirts with the blasphemy laws. Best on side two is “The Man Who Couldn’t Cry”, which is much more like the Loudon I like; a stripped-back, dry and compelling storyteller, this one being a six minute tragi-tale of a man who faces all sorts of trials and tribulations but remains emotionless until the day he dies of dehydration. When he gets it right it's a laugh-a-long-a-Loudon all the way!
