After plans for a live album were scrapped due to technical difficulties this studio recording was made in March 1966, the album being issued in July. The second Mayall album, and the first for Eric Clapton, it featured a core band line-up of John Mayall (lead vocals, piano, Hammond organ, harmonica), Eric Clapton (lead guitar), John McVie (bass guitar) and Hughie Flint (drums). They were augmented by a horn section that included Alan Skidmore (tenor sax), Johnny Almond (baritone sax) and Derek Healey (trumpet). Good taste is shown by covering “It Ain't Right” (Little Walter, 1956) and “Ramblin' On My Mind” (Robert Johnson, 1936), both of which are fine. I struggle to love much of the album due to my agitation with Clapton's virtuosity.
