Another largely namby-pamby effort from an ex-Beatle; why do they all revel in conservative safe beat music? That said, the safe beat opener “Mind Games” gets pass marks on account of the fact it has an enjoyable mellow-vibe, with a descending chord sequence that puts me in mind of “Whiter Shade Of Pale” and comes complete with a make-love-not-war message - who can argue with that? Side one also boasts a rather fab stab at warmongers, “Bring On The Lucie (Freda Peeple)”; “Well you were caught with your hands in the kill, And you still got to swallow your pill, As you slip and you slide down the hill, On the blood of the people you killed, Stop the killing now!”. Complementing the piece, the session men find a great groove and stick with it doggedly, 'Sneaky Pete' Kleinow's pedal steel guitar adding a cherry on top of a nicely-baked cake. We're into silly season as “Nutopian International Anthem” closes the side with recorded silence. Nil points (but discounted in the album rating so no harm done). Nothing competes on side two as the LP drifts away MOR style. Where's that “Twist n Shout” / “Tomorrow Never Knows” / “Revolution” spirit gone?
