Major label mania strikes - Cooper Clarke hits Epic! The first of three Cooper Clarke albums to officially feature The Invisible Girls, fellow Salfordians who’d been specially formed to provide a musical backdrop to the banter of the bard. The band was based around the nucleus of Joy Division producer Martin Hannett and keyboardist Steve Hopkins, with contributions from, amongst others, Pete Shelley of Buzzcocks and Bill Nelson of Be-Bop Deluxe, both of whom feature on this LP. The combo help to make the album’s highlight, “Reader’s Wives”, where, just for a minute, John Cooper Clarke is the new David Bowie. “(I Married A) Monster From Outer Space” digs into 50s sci-fi to deliver another fantastic highlight: “But when we went walking tentacle in hand, You could sense that the earthlings would not understand, They’d go nudge nudge when we got on the bus saying 'It’s extra-terrestial, not like us; And it’s bad enough with another race, But fuck me… a monster! from outer space?'” A smash hit on so many different levels - and this is the essence of JCC’s appeal…
