Not too shabby, dragged down a little by some late night instrumental meandering fillers, but pulled up by some top notch soul brother action. The boy-girl duet “You’ve Got The Power” had been a little beauty when James was joined by Bea Ford on the “Think” LP in 1960. It’s reworked here with Vicki Anderson, with an increased intensity from both the orchestra and the vocalists, and serves as an excellent soul ballad highlight that gives Etta and Harvey a run for their money. “Shhhhhhh (For A Little While)” is next best… just JB organeering and grunting away with the band with the occasional “alright nows”… and “give me some respect”… simple and plain but thoroughly engaging… It’s really quite a beautiful thing… There’s one other song reworked from the back catalogue - “Stone Fox”, originally done on last years “Sings Raw Soul”, which loses the “country rock” guitar of 1967 and is SO much better for it. Good god almighty :-O
