“Home Is Where The Music Is” by Hugh Masekela - album review
features in: Album Chart of 1972 ● Album Chart of the Decade: 1970s ● 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die |
Acclaimed double album set from the 32-year-old brass player, largely entrenched in the realms of soul-jazz. There are two keepers for me; the relaxing “Uhome” (written by Miriam Makeba?) very much puts me in mind of that great Miles Davis record, “In A Silent Way” from '69, whilst “Ingoo Pow-Pow (Children's Song)” channels tribal rhythms and gets all shamanic with it for a memorable and enjoyable finale. Pity they weren't all that wild and tribal.
