They're looking all Star Trek on that cover, but what were Scott-Heron & Jackson trying to tell us about the LP? Said the latter: “To those of us living in 1979, it felt like 1980 was the twenty-first century. With 1984, the Orwellian doomsdate, right around the corner, we were concerned. Even though the Vietnam War was years away, many of us still saw a glimmer of hope in the seventies. But now there really wasn't, as Gil laments in the song '1980,' 'Even no way back to '75, much less 1969.'” How I wish this state-of-the-nation address was delivered in a harder-edged brand of funk. I keep hanging in, hoping for a change back to the “Revolution” glories but it's just not happening. As it is, their jazzy brand of R n B has next to no chance with me.
