“Hot Rats” by Frank Zappa - album review
| features in: Album Chart of 1969 ● Album Chart of the Decade: 1960s ● 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die |
“A movie for your ears” says Frank in his liner notes. Turns out it's mostly a silent movie, with 5 of the 6 being instrumentals. A guest vocals appearance from Captain Beefheart on “Willie The Pimp” is very welcome, but this is spoiled as Frank takes over halfway through the 9 minutes to show us what he can do with that guitar, stretching and bending strings this way and that. Technically, it's a very fine work - a classic of the jazz-rock genre I'm told. I wouldn't give up on him - but I'll pass on this one.
