A welcome turn to the contemporary from Ewan, bolstered throughout by prominent co-vocal harmonizing from Peggy. “The Ballad Of Springhill” sings of the Nova Scotian mining pit disaster of just 2 years earlier, epitomized with the chilling line "2 miles of earth for a marking stone". Peggy's “The Lifeboat Mona” reflects upon an event even fresher to mind, written, recorded and released within a matter of months of the December '59 tragedy off the coast of Fife which took the lives of 8 men. Closing side 1 poignantly, “When I Was A Young Lad” is an outstanding piece of work from Ewan's pen, a highly evocative lament centred on broken dreams and the grind of prison life. Even more dramatic is “The Crooked Cross” which warns that the dangerous flames of German Nazism are not fully doused: "They are free (they are free), Nazi soldiers (they are free), Nazi statesman (they are free), In Germany (they are free), Free to work among us still, Free to poison, lie and kill, Free to finish Hitler’s plans, Stop them now, while you can, while you can." The message is loud and clear from these ace volksters.
