Hi, I’m Eric Burdon and tonight Matthew, I’m going to be… Tom Jones. “Eric Is Here” featured Burdon and drummer Barry Jenkins recording the works of various pop songwriters, accompanied (despite the cover billing) by the Horace Ott Orchestra, although it is possible that some members of the first incarnation Animals were present during the Autumn 1966 recording sessions. It’s an interesting album, but I don’t get my teenage kicks with it. He does 3 Randy Newman tunes, including a drab version of “I Think It’s Going To Rain Today” which pales beside Nina Simone’s very good 1969 version, and indeed is dwarfed by UB40’s all-time classic version of 1980. Still, it wasn’t all bad and at least it’s good to see an artist who’s prepared to take risks. Its just… Tom Jones ain’t where it’s at man…
