The limited edginess of January’s debut LP is further eroded on the follow up just 9 months later, as the malpracticing Doctors regress to the point where they wouldn’t sound too out of place as a British R n B band of 1965 – and what’s the point of that? The plodding “I Can Tell” (Bo Diddley, 1962) serves as a stodgy opener and immediately gets my back up. Recovery is immediate though – “Going Back Home” rocks it good-style, with some ace harmonica, a cool vocal and a tough back beat. For this one, songwriter Wilko Johnston teamed up Mick Green (Johnny Kidd and the Pirates) whom he idolized as a bit of a role model; it’s a triumphant union. “Back In The Night” is next and I almost don’t know what to make of it – they want to be Sweet now? It’s not bad actually – but it makes me nervous. On “Another Man” they play like Rock n Roll grandads at a golden anniversary reunion. Again, they recover at the end of side 1 with “Don’t Let Your Daddy Know”; it’s the cool combo of Lee on harmonica and the softer / more nonchalant vocal of Wilko stepping up to the mike which seems to do it best for me. Side 2 finds the group completely running out of ideas, with not a single track finding my favour – the lame cover of “Don’t You Just Know It” (Huey ‘Piano’ Smith and The Clowns, 1958) is a particularly low point. In 1975, England’s dreaming of a new musical future – but this isn’t it.
