“David Bowie [1967]” by David Bowie - album review

Released on 1st June 1967 - the same day as The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Both had an R n B bypass. And “David Bowie” was certainly an adventurous release, especially for a 20-year-old, veering between the pop-ape of Tommy Steele, the goofiness of the Bonzos and the psuedo-comedic side of the English satire favoured by Ray Davies. Which, to boot, and akin to this offering, has musical roots at least a century old. Bowie would later comment “I didn’t know if I was Max Miller or Elvis Presley”. Bravely unfashionable? Or just an all-over the shop mess? Whatever, it has it’s moments…
