Debut album from the Californian quintet formed in 1965 by two blues enthusiasts, Alan Wilson and Bob Hite. Hite and Wilson met in 1965 and discovered their mutual love for collecting early blues records. Hite, known as “the Bear”, was a former record shop owner with an outgoing personality and a gravelly old-time blues voice. Wilson, called “Blind Owl”, was his opposite. Quiet and reserved, he had majored in music at Boston University, and was known for his extraordinary prowess on the harmonica. They took their name from Tommy Johnson’s 1928 “Canned Heat Blues”, a song about an alcoholic who had desperately turned to drinking Sterno, generically called “Canned Heat”. 1967 was a big breakthrough year for the band - a year which seen them sign with Liberty Records, perform at the inaugral Monterey Pop Festival in June, and release their first LP - an 11 song set which ran through a varied blues catalogue from William Harris in 1928 to Sonny Boy Williamson II in 1963 with knowing references to blues legends left, right and centre.
