“Slow Train Coming” by Bob Dylan - album review
features in: Album Chart of 1979 ● Album Chart of the Decade: 1970s |

Bob Dylan’s final LP of the 1970s was his first since becoming a born-again Christian, and all of the songs either express his strong personal faith, or stress the importance of Christian teachings and philosophy. Once again, the journeyman creates a whole new band for the project, this time featuring Mark Knopfler (guitar) and Pick Withers (keyboards) from Dire Straits as well as The Muscle Shoals horn section. Whilst it’s not completely dreadful it’s getting there; “I Believe In You” is pure schmaltz and “Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking” is merely the sound of session men in blues rock cliché overdrive. I guess a soft rock album full of songs about God is just not my thing…
