“The Stranger” by Billy Joel - album review
features in: Album Chart of 1977 ● Album Chart of the Decade: 1970s ● 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die ![]() |

The critically acclaimed fifth album from the 28-year-old piano man was delivered in September, 1977. It was a big commercial breakthrough for him, reaching #2 in the Billboad 200, breaking the Top 20 for the first time. Fuelling sales, the 4 American singles were all hits too: “Just The Way You Are” (#3), “Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)” (#17), “Only The Good Die Young” (#24) and “She's Always A Woman” (#17). It's mostly too middle-of-the-road for my tastes, but the sheer quality of the songwriting is to be admired, and I genuinely enjoy two of the tracks.
