“Alice’s Restaurant” by Arlo Guthrie - album review
features in: Album Chart of 1967 ● Album Chart of the Decade: 1960s |
His debut album was released in September, 1967, just a few weeks before his Daddy died. Ol’ Woody got to hear a demo version, which is pleasing. On this evidence, it seems Arlo had inherited some of that famous old Guthrie dry wit. “Alice's Restaurant Massacree” (recorded live) showcases Arlo's deadpan delivery, as he protests against the Vietnam War draft, with a comically exaggerated, but nevertheless true story from his own life. It’s the only live song on the album and, with an 18-minute runtime, takes up the entirety of side 1. Well, if a story’s worth telling…
