“2,000,000 Voices” by Angelic Upstarts - album review
features in: Album Chart of 1981 ● Album Chart of the Decade: 1980s |

Seems every second record back in the early 1980s of Thatcher’s Britain was making protest. What a strange co-incidence. Mass unemployment, war and police abusing powers are the 3 main courses on “2,000,000 Voices”. It’s another thought-provoking album from these working class heroes. Musically, it’s less thrashy than the debut, the punk’s a little less oi a little more pop, with occasional flourishes of reggae, alt. folk and even a bit of poetry on “Heath’s Lament”. “Taking guns to Afghanistan” sings Mensi on “Guns For The Afghan Rebels” as the mujahideen fights against the Soviet invasion. For many decades to come the actors will change, but the play remains the same…
