The European Cup winners of 1974 continued their good form into ’75 with their classic 1-2-2 formation – with Stig at the back, their technically gifted midfield duo of Björn and Benny and a cracking pair of strikers in Agnetha and Frida, they were pretty hard to beat as pop acts go. They’re on the front-foot from the off with “Mamma Mia” – that’s Juventus taken care off. Always vulnerable on the counter though, the cod-reggae of “Tropical Loveland” sees them take a battering from a touring Jamaican XI. It’s not long before they’re back in front though – “SOS”, a classical-pop stunner, delivers a knock-out blow to Rapid Vienna; a commemorative single to recognise the victory gives them another worldwide smash, following last years’ infamous triumph over Anderlecht at “Waterloo”. “Man In The Middle”, which is obviously a covert tribute to referees, is way too sickly and registers as a loss at Grasshoppers Zurich. The schlager-tastic pop-bells of “I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do” puts an end to the strong challenge this year from Borussia Mönchengladbach. The pseudo-Slade pomp-stomp of “Rock Me” signals a surprise loss away to Wolverhampton Wanderers. Unbelievably, they return to the scene of last years’ trophy success, and, once again, Anderlecht are blown-away on “So Long”. All in all, this is a hard-earned cinq points – not too shabby in my world for a pop quartet. Well played Sweden.
