In some ways the youth of the 30s and 40s were better off by virtue of the fact that they could only listen intently to their favourite artists, with no other distractions. Unfortunately for the class of 1982, they’ve all become retro-victims of the video revolution, and there is, nor should there be, any hiding place for the perpetrators responsible for, what has come to be known as, “the year of the great fashion disaster”. Looking back at certain acts from the period I think “how on EARTH could I ever have embraced these goons?” Then I look at photographs of myself from the period and I think “who IS that goon?” As far as A Flock Of Seagulls debut album goes, there wasn’t much depth to it, but the 2 best songs did benefit from terrifically irresistible melody lines… and even the big haircut brigade can still sound alright on the radio…
